Shazam! Fury of the Gods Movie Full Review (2023)

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the highly anticipated sequel to 2019's Shazam!, is finally here. The movie brings back the same cast and crew from the first film, with David F. Sandberg returning to direct and Zachary Levi reprising his role as the titular superhero. The film also introduces new characters, including the villainous Hespera, played by Helen Mirren, and her sister Kalypso, played by Lucy Liu.

The film picks up a few years after the events of the first film, with Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his foster brother Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) now living together and attending high school. However, their peaceful lives are disrupted when the villainous Hespera and Kalypso arrive on Earth in search of a powerful artifact that could grant them unimaginable power. Meanwhile, Shazam (Zachary Levi) and the rest of the Shazam family must learn to work together and harness their powers to stop the sisters and save the world.

The film is a fun and entertaining ride from start to finish. The humor and heart of the first film are still present, with plenty of laughs and touching moments throughout. The chemistry between the cast members is also as strong as ever, with Levi and Grazer's banter being a particular highlight. The addition of new characters also adds some freshness to the story, with Mirren and Liu both delivering memorable performances as the film's villains.

One of the film's strengths is its action sequences. The superhero battles are well choreographed and visually stunning, with the Shazam family's different powers making for some creative and exciting fights. The special effects are also top-notch, with Hespera's powers in particular being a highlight.

Another standout aspect of the film is its themes. While the first film focused on family and the importance of finding a place to belong, Fury of the Gods explores the theme of power and its corrupting influence. The film does a good job of balancing this heavier theme with its more lighthearted moments, making for a movie that's both fun and thought-provoking.

However, the film does have some weaknesses. The plot can feel a bit predictable at times, with some of the twists and turns not being particularly surprising. Additionally, while the new characters are interesting, they don't get as much development as they could have. Hespera and Kalypso are menacing villains, but we don't learn much about their motivations or backstory beyond a few brief exposition scenes.

Overall, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a worthy follow-up to the first film. It's a fun, action-packed adventure with a great cast and some impressive visual effects. While it's not without its flaws, it's still an enjoyable movie that's sure to please fans of the superhero genre. Whether you're a longtime Shazam fan or a newcomer to the character, Fury of the Gods is definitely worth a watch.
