The movie begins with a prologue, where we see the origin story of Aquaman's parents, Atlanna and Tom Curry. Atlanna, an Atlantean, washes up on the shores of a lighthouse where Tom finds her and takes care of her. They fall in love, but Atlanna has to leave to protect Tom and their unborn child from the wrath of the Atlantean king.
The story then jumps to the present day, where we see Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, rescuing sailors from a submarine. He is then contacted by Mera, a princess from Atlantis, who informs him that his half-brother, Orm, is planning to wage war on the surface world. Arthur initially refuses to help but changes his mind after an attack by Orm's forces on his hometown.
The film then becomes a quest for Arthur to claim his rightful place as the King of Atlantis, which involves him searching for the Trident of Atlan, the only weapon powerful enough to defeat Orm. Along the way, he faces numerous obstacles and battles, including a fight with Orm and a sea monster.
The film's strength lies in its visual effects, which are stunning. The underwater world of Atlantis is breathtaking, and the creatures that inhabit it are imaginative and detailed. James Wan does an excellent job of bringing this world to life and making it believable. The action scenes are also well choreographed and exciting, with Jason Momoa proving to be a capable action hero.
The film's weakness, however, lies in its script. The story is straightforward and predictable, and the dialogue is often cheesy and clichéd.
